The Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT), Bargarh, was established in the year 2008 under the aegis of O/o the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Strategically located in the vibrant handloom hub of Bargarh, Odisha, the institute was set up to foster excellence in the development, promotion and sustainability of the handloom industry in the eastern region of India.
The inception of IIHT Bargarh was aimed at addressing the challenges faced by the handloom sector, such as modernization, skill development and innovation. The institute plays a pivotal role in providing well qualified technocrats for handloom and textile industry. Tradition with innovation is the main moto of the Institute. It focuses on the preservation of traditional weaving techniques while embracing modern technologies to enhance the global competitiveness of Indian handlooms.
IIHT Bargarh offers 3 years Diploma in Handloom & Textile Technology (DHTT), designed to equip students with knowledge of textile manufacturing, dyeing, designing and quality control. The institute also conducts training programs and workshops for artisans and entrepreneurs to upgrade their skills and adopt contemporary practices.
The institute is promoting research and development in handloom technology and contributing to the growth of small-scale and cottage industries. Its collaboration with handloom cooperatives, state governments and private enterprises ensures a holistic approach to the upliftment of the sector.
